COLD TURKEY! that was how.

circa 1988…  i was in my mid-twenties, was away from my family studying  in a finishing school in beautiful Perth, West Australia.

This was my very first time to live so far away from my family for a long period of time (6 months ehehehe).  My first time to live in a country with more than 2 seasons, as from where i was born, we have only wet and dry season (meaning, el nino and/or la nina in modern parlance).

Experiencing aloneness and the cold winter down under were only two of the many firsts for me at that time, and another of those firsts was buying myself a pack of Peter Jackson’s menthol cigarettes.

Fast forward to 2008.   now in my mid-forties….

Because i discovered the sport in running, i got myself a personal trainer, began my regular gym visits, and tried to watch my diet, more on for my physical well-being and the cosmetic part will just follow.   I have decided to quit smoking as well, as i know this would greatly help me build up my endurance in my choice of sport and quit i did, on June 01, 2008.

Okay, it was not perfect, as i slipped back into smoking again in 2009.

But, still desiring to finally kick the nasty habit, and with my perseverance  to put an end to my “affair” with it, i was able to quit finally, one fine day, i puffed my last and throwing away the cigarette butt, i just said, “THAT WILL BE IT!”   and  i am proud to say that i have been “clean” for the last 6 months or so and hope and pray that it will be until my last breath that i will stay away from smoking.

One thing i did that helped me was i changed my routine, especially after meals, where me and my other smoker relatives converged in that part of my house where we are allowed to smoke. Now, after breakfast, lunch or dinner, i immediately retreat back to my room to do other things to take my mind off the smoke… CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE, that’s the secret.

second is that, my mother, who also quit when she turned 77, and after almost 5 decades of smoking, became my inspiration and that, i do not want to encourage her to go back to smoking by catching me smoke again. now, she is ‘SOBER’ for the last two years!!! 🙂

Lastly, and most importantly, all these became possible and doable through my prayers.  Yes, in anything i so desire to happen in my life, i kneel down and pray for it!! There were times my requests were granted, there were times they were not.  But knowing the He is never late and His answers come at the rightest time, i just sit patiently and wait, now, even without a stick in between my fingers.

Romans 12:2 – “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
